This is the coolest thing I’ve ever reblogged. I think about this all the time.
Nobody can even comprehend this fact. There are 7 billion people on the Earth. You can’t comprehend an afterlife because it seems too crazy? Well I can’t comprehend this current life and nobody’s going to tell me it doesn’t exist.
Think about it.
YES YES I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER THIS THE OTHER DAY because I have this all the time, especially when I travel by train which is one of the reasons why I DO travel by train a lot.
I’M REALLY GLAD THAT THERE’S A WORD FOR THIS WOW
This is amazing. Sweet baby jesus. I feel this so much it’s not even funny.
Just wanted to reblog this again to point out why I like history. Because the realization of “Sonder” goes not only to the people you pass on the street, but everyone that’s ever lived, ever. And everyone who will live.
I think about this ALL the time
“Sonder” is a French word meaning “to probe,” as in any of the following: “test with a probe; measure the depth (of something); to look around; to ask many questions with the intention of figuring something out (as a puzzle, like an interrogation).” It’s a transitive version of the verb “sonde,” also meaning “to probe.”
That said, tumblr’s given definition is an idea that obviously resonates with a lot of people (see: above commentary). It’s a humbling reminder of your individual insignificance - with all this life happening around you, who are you to say you’re more important/special/interesting than any random stranger? It’s an idea that deserves an English-language word. (There’s probably already a word for it in some other languages.)
I just wish that when people make up words they would stick to an etymology that makes sense with the definition. Or, you know, not borrow verbs from another language and claim they’re actually English nouns.
